There's an endless amount of home improvement ideas out there. But what home improvements should you do first? Lori Alvarez and Amy Cruz, Southern California realtors, are here to talk about what improvements, cosmetics, and upgrades to consider for your home.

The Question: What Home Improvements should you do?

What to do first if you’re keeping it long-term?

We like to focus on generational Real Estate, long-term investment, and Family Legacy building. Check out Lori Alvarez’s recent home renovation in our last episode!

Questions to ask yourself first:

  • How long are you staying in the house?

    • Is this long-term to pass on to your family? Is this a fixer-upper and flip?

  • What are you trying to accomplish?

    • Is it longevity? Is it a lease property? Are you customizing needs?

Next, ask yourself:

  1. What should I improve on my home (selling or keeping)?

  2. How long will I own the property?

  3. Cosmetic improvements if selling right away and not keeping?

    • Paint, molding, carpet, appliances

    • lighting, interior, exterior, flooring

    • shutters, blinds, curtains

    • kitchen cabinets, countertops

    • front door, bathrooms

    • ceiling fans, lights

    • decks, porches, patios

  4. Mechanical improvements

  • roof

  • AC

  • plumbing

  • windows

  • doors

  • electrical

  • landscaping

Next step recommendation:

Look at your budget. Measure the costs of time and money spent. Decide what is non-negotiable. Decide what adds the most value to your home (talk to a lender or an agent to learn more about that). Changing fixtures and basic cosmetics are easy and cost-effective. You’ll be amazed at the difference.

Give yourself time to do a renovation. Things may not always go according to plan.

And have fun! Enjoy building your home sweet home to match you.
