Are you afraid to move out of state? If you're thinking about taking the leap, journeying across the states, and starting anew—have no fear. That's how Mike and Tara Yazawa found their dream home and you can too.

The Question: How to remove my fear of moving out of state?

Making The Leap

Facebook message your real estate agent, just like Mike did. He finally decided it was time to make the move from California to Missouri.

"It's one thing to do business with friends. It's another thing to do business with, with someone that you trust."

Mike shared some wonderful advice. First, have a discussion with an agent you trust.

You have so many questions and you're afraid to make a move.

Is the timing right? What's going to happen? Where are you going? What about my current house?
"I knew at that point that we were actually going to move out of state, but we actually didn't even know where. We had a shortlist. But it was kind of one of those things where we're like, okay, [...] it was time for me to leave California. And I was okay with that because I knew that there was something on the other end that was going to be wonderful and amazing."

Pushing Forward

COVID-19 broke a month after Mike had the conversation with Lori. Then, Mike was laid off. But guess what? He's living in Missouri.

"I didn't know what was gonna happen or anything, but I knew that if nothing else, we were going to move forward no matter what."

And the house went on the market. He didn't let fear hold him back.

How did you narrow down your relocation choices?

It was about Family. After looking at the different options, it made sense.

"Let's be closer to family. COVID was the reason for deciding that. I want to be closer to my family after everything that happened with COVID. So that was the final decision."

Making the Dream happen

Lori only saw the home through Facebook Live, but gosh it's a dream house.

"During this whole experience, there was that unknown. There was that fear. It's the fears that everybody else has, whenever they're doing this. Is it the right time to sell? And when I get a loan, is it going to be the right interest rate? Am I going to find a place? All of those things."

Mike hesitated with fear like many would. But Lori looked at him and said, "Look, listen. Yes, keep moving forward. Just keep moving forward. And everything will come together. And that was the best advice I could have gotten."

That's all it takes to make your dreams happen. You keep moving forward. One step at a time. One of the great perks to a real estate agent—we know what steps are coming and what steps to take to take the fear out of it.

Sure, if Mike had waiting he may have had a little more equity in his home—meaning he would have sold for more today. But! As Mike shared, "Yes, I might have made a little bit more on the sale, but I honestly would rather have equity now, right when I moved into my new place. Because this is my place that I'm going to be living in."

And that decision has opened up more opportunities. Expensive real estate in California paired with cheaper real estate in Missouri means more house for your dollar! And now, Mike has the freedom to invest, travel, visit California, and more.

Mike knew his dream home wasn't as possible in California. So what did he do? He moved forward and thought outside the box. And now, when he clocks out of work, he can go fishing in the seven-acre lake he lives right off of.

A Listing in the Pocket

Sometimes, there are homes not listed on the MLS (Multiple Listing Service) that are for sale or coming soon. And it was that home that Mike ended up choosing. After debating between new construction, historic homes, and the many to choose from, it was the one.

Tip: Be sure to ask your agent if they have any listings that are not listed.

"Selling your home is incredibly stressful. [...] But like everything in life, to have the things that you want in life, you need to take that step you need to take go into an area that you feel uncomfortable, and you hope that when you go into that uncomfortable area, that you have someone like Lori next to you, that's helping you through that."

"That's what allows us to wake up every single day and see a beautiful lake and basically feel like we're on vacation every single day."

What was moving day like?

After purchasing the new house, it was nothing but excitement. New place. Less traffic. More affordable. Less stressful. Closer to family. Three acres to themselves.

"I find myself walking on my land. That's like three acres and there's woods and animals and deer."

Do you miss California?

"I miss aspects of California, some of the food—In N Out. What I don't miss is the traffic. What I don't miss is the cost of living. And what I don't miss is not having the dream house home that I've always wanted."

"I wanted the simple life, I wanted less complication. You know, I wanted to cook and eat. And, you know, Tara is kind of, you know, her own hippie self. And she goes, and she meditates by the lake"

Mike and Tara did what was right for them. They moved forward and now they're enjoying life.

"We are both just being able to relax, we're excelling at both of our jobs, we are having more fun and enjoying because we go out and we sit next to the koi pond and, and actually talk about what couples need to talk about sometimes."

It's such a relief to not be living with the pressures of a paycheck to paycheck lifestyle.

"It's enjoyable to not have that pressure of consistently living paycheck to paycheck because at the end of the month, we have money left over."

What are your words of wisdom to someone that's scared to move out of state?

  1. Make sure you're ready.

  2. Take one step at a time. Trust it will all fall together.

  3. There's a place out there for you.

"I really didn't understand. I didn't know. And I think that that was my biggest fear. I didn't know and I needed to ask and I got the information from you."
Do what's going to make you happier. Live the life you want. And build the legacy you want.
