The Question: what makes the community a home?

Every community is in need of support and community comes from the people. Alta Skinner, Community Volunteer/Advocate, has made it her life's work to service her community near the city of San Dimas. What turns a community into a family and a home?

What is Community?

Community is something Alta Skinner knows a thing or two about.

Alta Skinner is the President of the La Verne - San Dimas Educational Foundation and actively serves her local community day in and day out. She bought her first home in January of 1966 in Covina, CA. Ever since she has resided within the vicinity and fallen in love with the community.

“She's surrounded by a beautiful family. She's surrounded by her grandchildren and she has a wonderful community that just supports you guys,” Lori noted. And doesn’t that just sound like a wonderful thing?

What is the heart of San Dimas?

“I think there’s not a better community around that supports volunteerism. And I think volunteerism is super—super important, not only because it provides some stability to the program, but it’s also a great networking source for social people who like to meet people,“ said Alta to Lori’s question.

How can we support our children’s education?

The most recent effort Alta has stood behind to better the community is to support the students. Many of them will be returning to school for the first time since the pandemic shifted the nation. Not only will they face the regular stressors of school, but they will also be adapting to a whole new world of overwhelming differences. If you would like to contribute materials to the foundation to better the conditions of the children’s education and support them reintegrating into public education, please visit www.lvsdef.org for more information.
